Maryland Coalition to Stop BGE Rate Hike
Anti-Rate Hike Coalition To Demonstrate in Annapolis and Lobby Legislators
at Special Session
Baltimore, MD, October 30, 2007 – Members of the Maryland Coalition to Stop
the BGE Rate Hike will demonstrate at 11am Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at
Lawyer's Mall in Annapolis and will enter legislators' offices and the
Special Session to lobby lawmakers to reregulate BGE and to make BGE a
publicly owned utility.
There are 2,009 publicly owned electric companies in the United States
that represent about 63% of the number of electric utilities, supply
approximately 10% of generation and generating capacity, and account for
about 15% of retail sales and 14% of revenue.
Following up on their promise to hold accountable anyone with the power to
stop the rate hike, the Coalition is taking its fight to the General
Assembly to show its dissatification with their lack of courage and
unwillingness to oppose BGE/Constellation as it games the system in its
quest for ever-increasing profits at the expense of residential ratepayers.
The Coalition also questions many lawmakers' questionable political
connections with Constellation Energy Group, beginning with Gov. O'Malley
who accepted $80,000 in campaign contributions while promising to "stop" the
rate hikes.
The Maryland Coalition to Stop the BGE Rate Hike is an umbrella organization
of various community groups, activists and concerned citizens who have been
working together for over a year to stop the energy rate hike for over 1.3
million BGE residential customers.
